‘No one is safe’: China purges record number of ‘tiger’ officials in 2023

China’s anti-corruption watchdog detained a record 45 high-ranking officials in 2023, according to a tally by the South China Morning Post. Over half of the detained officials, or “tigers” as they are known, had already retired, breaking an unspoken rule that former officials would be spared from investigation. Post senior correspondent William Zheng spoke with Regina de Luna about what is understood to be the highest number of senior officials to face investigation since a nationwide corruption crackdown was launched in 2013.
