Japan’s government has released a report detailing countermeasures to be taken in the event of a volcanic eruption at Mount Fuji, just southwest of Tokyo. The report, which is based on estimates from expert researchers, was released on March 21, 2025. It predicted that a major eruption at the iconic peak could release as much as 10 times the amount of debris generated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated a large coastal area in northeastern Japan. Authorities said people would be forced to seek shelter in the event of an eruption that would leave deep deposits on exposed surfaces, as well as cause other types of damage.
