Chinese President Xi Jinping used his annual National Day address on September 30, 2024, to send a strong warning to “separatists” in Taiwan as well as emphasise Beijing’s backing for Hong Kong and Macau. Xi called Taiwan “China’s sacred territory” at an official event in Beijing to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1. Beijing sees Taiwan as part of China to be reunited by force if necessary. Most countries, including the United States, do not recognise the self-ruled island as independent.
