China’s Mars rover has found evidence of liquid water at low Martian latitudes. As part of the country’s Tianwen-1 Mars exploration mission, the Zhu Rong rover landed on Mars in May 2021. It positioned itself close to crescent-shaped dunes and sent a stream of data to Earth before switching to dormant mode. Based on the data, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences believe the surface characteristics of the dunes, which they estimate were formed 400,000 to 1.4 million years ago, suggest snow and frost once melted into liquid saline water there.
