This week’s question: If you could choose a celebrity to be the ambassador for a historical site in Macau, what is one initiative they could host to promote its legacy?

This question has been sponsored by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), which is responsible for implementing the city’s tourism policies, enhancing its reputation as a quality destination, and promoting local tourism services to attract diverse visitors. Find out more about the MGTO on their website.

Here are our readers’ unique New Year’s resolutions ...

Renee Lui, 11, Holy Angels Canossian School: My New Year’s resolution is to break the highest score in the “Google Snake” game. I always fail to be patient and often give up easily. Therefore, I would want to build my patience in a relaxing way by playing the game. It is also a way to exercise my fingers. It is a fun game that can kill two birds with one stone.

Carina Chiu Sam-yee, 13, St Mary’s Canossian College: Start a small business creating and selling custom-made jewellery. This resolution allows me to explore my creativity and entrepreneurial skills while providing a unique product to others. I can learn basic jewellery-making techniques, experiment with different materials and designs, and promote my creations through social media or local markets. I will also learn about customer service pricing and time management.

Charis Chan, 14, Malvern College Hong Kong: Try a new food item every month. My sister suddenly became interested in cooking healthy meals in the latter half of 2023, and it inspired me to try out a new food every month in 2024 as my favourite food list had not changed in the past few years, with half the items not being very healthy. It will also allow me to learn more about different global food cultures as I will be eager to find out why that food is popular or why people from that local culture love it or hate it.

Muhammad Irbaz Khan, 16, Lions College: Speaking of resolutions, it is not uncommon for us to be overwhelmed with bland goals people set for themselves. This was the primary reason I tried to be different from the norm this year, and that is when I came up with the idea of challenging myself to learn how to solve a Rubik’s Cube. To accomplish my goal, I will seek help from online tutorials, and if they do not prove helpful, I will ask my friend, who is a master at solving Rubik’s Cubes. It will be interesting to see if I can complete it or not.’

Circle Yuen Tsz-ching, 12, Pope Paul VI College: An unusual and quite disgusting resolution I have for the new year is to stop picking at my pimples. For some reason, when I am stressed or bored, I love to scratch my pimples. The sensation I get from doing this is indescribably amazing. However, I know this may cause my skin to redden and get infected with germs. So, I have set this as my New Year’s resolution.

Wu Yuet-hin, 12, St Paul’s Co-educational College: My unusual New Year’s resolution is to practise reciting the alphabet backwards. Not only can the skill be a party trick or an icebreaker in awkward social situations, but it can also improve my mental capacity and working memory, as proved by neuroscientists.

Brianna Mo Yik-yin, 15, Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School: New goals and a new soul are most likely what people come up with when mentioning the new year as if everyone is trying to get rid of their old self imminently. Whenever I try to set myself numerous inspiring New Year’s resolutions, none of them are accomplished ultimately. That is when I started to wonder whether looking back at targets unfulfilled in the past and completing them, like finishing a book halfway through and getting my room organised immediately, would be a better resolution for the new year than creating more of them.

Alyssa Yuen Tsin-laam, 14, Maryknoll Convent School: I hope to become a romcom K-drama expert and keep a journal about my afterthoughts. Romcom K-dramas refer to romantic comedies from Korea. I’ve watched more than 20 of this genre this year, and after watching, I am usually overwhelmed with my thoughts. In 2024, I hope to write about my feelings and thoughts so I can document them better and share them with people not into that genre and perhaps turn them into a fanatic like me.

Top 10: If you could only say one word for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Kong Tsz-wai, 11, Holy Angels Canossian School: I always like to collect different weird things. Therefore, my unusual New Year’s resolution will be to collect my cat’s hair and use it to make a felt. To reach my goal, I will brush my cat every day. I hope my cat won’t be irritated. After brushing it, I will put its hair into a bag. For next year’s Christmas, I can use it to make a felt in the shape of a Christmas tree.

Solar Ho, 13, Pui Kiu College: Not to get too angry when I am gaming. Sometimes, during a match, my teammates decide to troll and make us lose. This makes me mad since I spent so much time playing to get to a rank I want just for my teammates to make me lose it. But I figured out that getting angry cannot help you too much, so I have decided to control my rage for the whole year unless it is a very unusual situation.
