Michelle Shen Jiamiao narrated her transition from a small, tightly-knit community in suburban California to the vibrant, diverse environment of Hong Kong with a reflective candour.

The move, prompted by her father’s job, plunged her into a setting different from anything she had known.

“The three years I’ve spent here have given me insight into a completely different world,” Michelle, now 17, observed, marking the contrast between her former life and her experiences in Hong Kong.

This new world presented a mosaic of cultures and backgrounds, a stark deviation from the uniformity of her hometown, she recalled.

Starting lessons at West Island School in the middle of the academic year, during online schooling, presented challenges. Michelle struggled to adapt academically and socially in a school system already a year and a half ahead in subjects like science. The difficulty of this adjustment was compounded by the task of forging new friendships in a remote learning environment.

Michelle’s approach to overcoming these challenges was grounded in self-authenticity and persistence. Her participation in the “Student Voice” initiative exemplified her dedication to making tangible improvements within the school. By engaging directly with the school’s food provider, Michelle played a pivotal role in enhancing the cafeteria’s offerings and environment.

She navigated the challenge of communicating student feedback constructively, emphasising the importance of maintaining open communication to form a productive partnership with the cafeteria staff.

The introduction of reusable glass plates showcased the effectiveness of student advocacy in fostering a safer and more comfortable dining experience. This initiative not only improved students’ day-to-day experiences but also demonstrated the impact of student voices in creating positive changes within the school environment.

Her leadership extended to roles in the Model United Nations and WIS allies, where she championed equality and global awareness, solidifying her reputation as a leader committed to positive change.

Michelle also led a “connections team,” where she guided her peers in running sessions for younger students, fostering community and support across year groups. This initiative, along with her volunteer work and a successful fundraising campaign for KELY Support Group, culminated in Michelle receiving the Best Devotion to School award at the Student of the Year (SOTY) Awards.

Organised by the South China Morning Post and sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the SOTY Awards recognise students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their schools and communities.
