China released new images of the next-generation Fujian aircraft carrier on January 2, 2024, the country’s first carrier with electromagnetic plane launch technology. A successor to the Liaoning and the Shandong carriers, the Fujian featured on Chinese state media’s evening newscast for the first time since April 2023. The Fujian’s unveiling was part of a segment on the military response to President Xi Jinping’s New Year’s call for “national rejuvenation”, which includes reunifying Taiwan with mainland China. China regards Taiwan as a breakaway province. Most countries, including the US, do not see it as an independent state.
