Hong Kong’s newest political party that was set up by three prominent Chinese mainland-born financiers has generated excitement as well as speculation about its connections with the central government in Beijing.
The Bauhinia Party’s founders say they established it out of a sense of disappointment over “weak” governance in the city and a pro-establishment camp stuck in a rut. Co-founder Charles Wong Chau-chi, in an exclusive interview with the South China Morning Post, laid out his party’s vision to unite Hongkongers following widespread social unrest starting in 2019. Wong also addressed suspicions raised about party members being underground members of the Chinese Communist Party. He insisted that the party was here to work with, and not replace, Hong Kong’s pro-establishment parties.
