Harry Bentley will head to the races on Saturday armed with information from legendary jockey Douglas Whyte, who will walk the track with the Englishman ahead of the meeting.
The 28-year-old has arrived in Hong Kong fully aware of the record English jockeys have in the city, with Seb Sanders (2004-05 and 2005-06) the last to compete on a full-time basis outside superstar Ryan Moore, but he says he will not allow himself to get bogged down by it.
On the plus side, the likes of Silvestre de Sousa, Andrea Atzeni, Oisin Murphy, Tom Queally, Martin Harley and Neil Callan have all been plucked from the English system to compete in Hong Kong.
“I take that stuff with a pinch of salt,” Bentley said. “That information is out there and I understand that but I have got to take this as I find it.
“I am a different individual so I am taking it as it comes, I don’t want to bog myself down with those numbers – I find it negative.
“I want to come into this as positive as I can and in the right mindset. I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to adapt to somewhere like this, I know it’s going to be a learning curve and I am going to pick up things along the way but I think I am pretty adaptable as a rider.”
Bentley is quick to point to his overseas experience in Dubai and Qatar, saying he hopes it holds him in good stead ahead of his first day at the races in almost a month.
“I have had the experience of riding in plenty of different jurisdictions where things are different, it’s not like I have only ridden in the UK,” he said.
“I think all that will stand me in good stead. Someone like Silvestre has done well here and he is a very positive rider so I take note of all of that.”

With three weeks of compulsory hotel quarantine under his belt, Bentley says he has kept fit using exercise equipment but admits nothing compares to riding a horse when it comes to preparing for the races.
With two rides for Whyte on Saturday, Bentley will ride work in the morning before the 13-time champion jockey shows him the ins and outs of Sha Tin.
“Who better to walk the track with than Douglas. It will be fantastic to see what he has got to tell me about it all,” he said.
“Fitness wise I am fine, I feel good and my weight is good. Obviously not having sat on a horse for nearly a month, I will be a little bit ring rusty.
“I think once I blow the cobwebs away, it will be fine. I will ride out on Saturday morning before the races so at least I will have sat on a horse. It is like riding a bike.”
In all, Bentley has six rides on the day and expects to have a similar number at Happy Valley on Wednesday night as he looks to quickly establish himself before the end of the season.
“It is hard to know what to expect being the new person on the block so I have got to say I am happy with it all,” Bentley said of his book of rides.

“I have been studying the website as much as I can, I can’t believe how much information is on there. There are no excuses for not knowing the form because it is all there.”
