Jockey Dylan Mo Hin-tung has been scolded by stewards for a ride they say lacked “initiative and judgment” at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.

Mo was hauled in by chief steward Kim Kelly at Sha Tin on Sunday to answer questions about his effort on $69 chance Baltic Success in the Class Two Alnwick Handicap (1,000m) after travelling four-wide throughout.

Stewards argued Mo should have obtained cover around the 600m mark and handed him a severe reprimand for his actions.

Mo was also warned he could have his licence to ride in Hong Kong ripped up if he became a repeat offender.

“[Mo] was placed on notice that the lack of initiative and judgment that he had shown on Baltic Success in this race was of considerable concern to the stewards as it fell well short of what is required of a jockey riding in Hong Kong,” the stewards’ report stated.

“He was told he had ridden Baltic Success poorly as there was a clear opportunity for him to obtain cover behind [rival] Stronger approaching the 600m given that he had to ride the horse aggressively for the previous 300m, which would have availed it of the opportunity to race with cover rather than being required to race four wide and without cover.

“Jockey Mo was advised that a repeat of this type of riding may result in his suitability to continue riding in Hong Kong being reviewed.”

Mo said he was instructed by trainer Danny Shum Chap-shing to try and lead or sit outside the leader in the race but was unable to after jumping slowly.

He told stewards he was then required to vigorously ride Baltic Success in an attempt to gain a position.

“He said approaching the 600m he was able to improve his position to race outside the hindquarters of Stronger but in a four-wide position,” the stewards’ report stated.

“He said he was not able to clear Stronger to his inside and this resulted in Baltic Success racing very wide and without cover.”

Mo has 12 winners this season from 308 rides and has already served a month-long suspension after pleading guilty to a charge of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure Racing Fighter obtained the best possible placing in February.
