Yang Chun-yat, 16, TWGHs Lui Yun Choy Memorial College: Many things have disappeared in my home, but I always find missing items in my hands. One day, I couldn’t find my phone, so I used the flashlight on my phone to look for it. Of course, I discovered I was already holding it. My hands seem to be the most mythical and magical place that has ever existed.
Chloe Huang, 18, Roedean School (UK): One time my suitcase got lost at the airport - it had all my homework and belongings in it. My jaw dropped the next day when I saw my suitcase on TV because the news had gone to film there. It was hilarious when I had to prove to my teachers that my suitcase was actually lost by showing them the clip on TV.
Wu Hei-man, 12, Chinese YMCA Secondary School: I’ve left my phone inside the fridge and freezer more than once when I was taking out sweets or putting in ice cream. It was good that it rang loud enough for me to notice where it was, or else I would have wasted money on a new phone.
Sophia Ling, 11, German Swiss International School: I remember the time I lost my phone and couldn’t find it anywhere. I searched every corner of my house, from the living room to the bedroom, and even checked the family car, but it was nowhere to be found. I started to panic. After hours of searching, I finally decided to check the freezer, and to my surprise, I found my phone there! I accidentally put it in the freezer while putting away groceries. I was relieved to have found my phone, but I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation.
What is the nicest gesture you’ve received from a stranger?
Tiffany Hui, 18, Westminster School: A few weeks ago, when I was at the cash register at the supermarket, I realised that my phone was missing. My phone was on do not disturb, so calling didn’t help. I eventually found it in a tray of oranges. My phone case was orange, so it was completely camouflaged with the fruit. I will never leave my phone on do not disturb again.
Charlotte Kwan, 21, The University of Hong Kong: My wallet. Whenever I pay for something, I put everything I am carrying in my wallet, which mostly has receipts. One time I took off my AirPods while talking to the cashier, and I just naturally put one AirPod in the very thin gap inside the wallet. I had no clue where I put it, and I didn’t figure it out until days later, the next time I had to pay for something.
Yanie Li Yan-yin, 11, Evangel College: I was calling my friend when I suddenly thought, “Where is my phone?!” I searched all my pockets and still couldn’t find it. I was really worried until my friend answered my call and I realised I was holding it. How silly am I?
Adrienne Fung, 17, Milton Academy: Once, I lost my favourite bracelet. After five months, I had given up all hope. I even considered buying a replacement online to cover my tracks. That night, I pulled out a pair of red Converse I hadn’t worn in a while – and there was my bracelet, stuck in between the laces. I’ve since made a habit of checking my shoes for missing items.
Things that just aren’t worth spending money on
Marcus Lum, 20, HKBU: My cat’s bed. Sometimes cats can be weird. One time, one of my slippers disappeared when I was in the shower. Then I heard my cat chewing on something - which turned out to be my slipper. I still haven’t gotten it back.
Natalie Yue, 14, Chinese International School: I always wear a silver heart locket I got for my 10th birthday that I will wear until I am 100 - so basically, I never take it off. One day it went missing, and two hours before my piano exam, I still hadn’t found it. It has always been my lucky charm, so I was thrown off balance without it. Per usual, my brother invaded my room and decided to make fun of the books I read. As he cracked open a book, my necklace appeared. I had used it as a bookmark when I fell asleep while reading. For the first time, I was thankful I had a brother who enjoyed annoying me.
