Travel provides the best onsite learning opportunities for people to immerse themselves in a different part of the world, to explore new learning experiences and connect with the world. Overseas study tours place students in new environments where students naturally learn to adapt, to be agile and boost confidence, which helps them to navigate their own paths to success.

Preface, an industry-leading EdTech company, partnered with UNESCO to offer the first-ever international coding summer programme in several dynamic and diverse locations including Tokyo, London, Singapore and Hong Kong, each one offering a unique cultural experience for future leaders aged from 7 to 17 years old.

Week One: Intensive Coding Bootcamp

During the first week, students take part in one of two bootcamp streams, (1) AI & Data Science or (2) Metaverse Entrepreneur, where they will gain technical skills and make use of computational and design thinking.

  1. AI & Data Science: Students learn about AI concepts, proficiency in Python programming, data science workflows, optimising machine learning models while gaining practical hands-on experience.

  2. Metaverse Entrepreneur: Students learn about game design and development, entrepreneurship, creative thinking, data analysis and digital marketing, including storytelling through video production.

Week Two: Hackathon in partnership with UNESCO

In the second week, students will participate in a hackathon in which students will be encouraged to develop active learning attitudes and critical thinking skills in a vibrant learning environment. Within a limited period of time, those enrolled in the AI programme will be tasked with developing a smart city application for sustainable communities, and in the Metaverse Entrepreneur stream, students will be challenged to create a functional game and a marketing pitch to our mentors. All projects require adopting Sustainable Development Goals outlined at the UN Sustainable Development Summit. A certificate will be awarded to all students who have successfully completed the programme.

Ellen Lau, Director of Training at Preface said, “In today’s globalised world, the future of education is learning that is decentralised and personalised. Taking coding and travel experience out of a traditional classroom and offering student real-life learning can give them fresh global perspectives as well as spark creativity. Let’s challenge and nurture future generations to grow to become creators as well as users of new technologies.”

Is the metaverse good for education?

At each location where the programmes are offered, students will gain tech skills and knowledge in AI & data science or the metaverse that can be applied immediately, reinforcing retention during the bootcamp. Hackathons put coding skills to work to solve interesting real-world challenges. Students learn to work collaboratively and become more confident as their learning is put into use.

Students will also be paired with experienced corporate leaders and professional instructors who will mentor them and offer expert advice to enhance the learning experience. Our extensive mentor network includes experts and professionals with working experience from top institutions like Animoca Brands, BBC, FedEx, NASA, Uber etc., and alumni from world top universities like University of Oxford, HarvardUniversity, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), London School of Economics (LSE), University College London (UCL).
