Deadly crash in Ethiopia is second in five months for new Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet

Investigators are looking into the cause of the February 10, 2019, crash of an Ethiopian Airlines jet that killed all 157 people from 35 countries on board. The flight from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to Kenya’s capital Nairobi had been underway only six minutes before it went down. The pilot had radioed to flight controllers about technical difficulties and was cleared to fly back to Addis Ababa, but the plane “lost contact” six minutes later.

The crash was the second within five months to involve one of Boeing’s new 737 MAX 8 jets. On October 29, 2018, an Indonesian Lion Air jet crashed 13 minutes after take-off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board. US aircraft maker Boeing said it was sending a technical team to help with the Ethiopian-led investigation.
