Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) start-up DeepSeek’s chatbot app has dethroned OpenAI’s ChatGPT, to claim the top spot on Apple’s US App Store. The namesake AI chatbot was reportedly developed at a far lower cost than OpenAI’s Chat GPT, but delivers similar performance. The free-to-use app released in the US on January 10, 2025, skyrocketed in popularity following the Chinese firm’s launch of its R1 open-source reasoning model.
