Nasa hits target asteroid in Earth-defence test

Nasa’s “DART” spacecraft successfully crashed into an asteroid on September 26, 2022, as part of a test of “the world planetary defence system”. The asteroid was around 11 million kilometres from Earth. The first phase of the crash was successful, but the team will spend the next couple of months analysing data to assess its impact on the asteroid’s trajectory
