Hong Kong has long had a reputation as a “food paradise”, but Muslim residents and visitors who adhere to a strict halal diet only have access to a fraction of what the city has to offer. Of the city’s 13,000 licensed restaurants, only 106 were halal-certified as of April 2024, according to a list compiled by the Hong Kong Tourism Board. The city has been trying to draw tourists back after several years of pandemic downturn. However, visitor numbers from predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East and Asia are lower than arrivals from other areas. Tourism officials and industry analysts say a lack of halal-certified establishments is part of why Hong Kong remains off the itinerary for many Muslim travellers.
