China’s Delta variant outbreak in Fujian surges as Covid-19 cases hit 165 in a week

The Delta variant outbreak in China’s southeastern province of Fujian continues to surge, with 165 total cases reported as of September 15, 2021. Following the outbreak a week ago, the cities of Putian and Xiamen have stepped up Covid-19 testing, while schools have moved courses online and social gatherings have been suspended. The latest surge is the first to include significant numbers of young children since China’s Covid-19 pandemic was first contained in April 2020. According to authorities, 36 children had been infected in Fujian’s Putian city as of September 13.
