“We don’t regard China as an adversary,” Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said during a three-day Nato Summit in Madrid on June 28, 2022. But Stoltenberg added that the transatlantic security alliance is concerned about Beijing’s ever-closer ties with Moscow since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The war has highlighted the West’s dependence on Russian resources and that the bloc needs to address similar reliance on China, he said. A recent survey of Nato member states found that 52 per cent view China as a security threat, an 11-point increase from 2021.
