Hong Kong is a driving force, if we keep our eyes open, Victor Chu says
The city is in danger of falling asleep at the wheel - it needs to keep innovating, improve education and act urgently on housing
On day 2 of a special series on ideas to take the city forward, we talk to banker Victor Chu Lap-lik.
Q: What is the one thing you most want to change in Hong Kong?
A: We must improve our education system, from elementary level, with the best talent teaching our children
The view from his wood-panelled office on the 21st floor is a veil of grey but banker Victor Chu Lap-lik paints a crystal clear picture of the future, delivered in a soft, clipped voice.
It is a gentle warning to Hong Kong: the city needs to look over its shoulder at the competition that is gathering pace all around the globe, or it risks becoming an also-ran in the China market.
Chu is chairman of First Eastern Investment Group, which has invested in over 150 projects in 51 cities over the past 25 years and is part owner of Japanese budget airline Peach.
