Hong Kong protests: Pro-democracy activists arrested
Joshua Wong and Agnes Chow were arrested this morning; other arrests have been made throughout the day
Joshua Wong, famous for his role in the 2014 Occupy Central protests, was recently arrested, along with other pro-democracy advocates.[Update: 5.05pm]
A further three arrests have been confirmed in connection with the ongoing protests.
- Althea Suen, the former president of the Hong Kong University Students' Union, said the police attempted to arrest her on Thursday morning at her home, but she was not there. According to a statement posted on her Facebook page on Friday, the police presented their search warrant and charged her for "conspiracy to destroy or damage property" and "entering or remaining in precincts of Chamber".
Suen, accompanied by her lawyer, arrived at the Wan Chai Police Headquarters at 2:30 pm on Friday.
- Lawmaker Cheng Chung-tai was arrested at a public event in Tin Shui Wai, and allegedly taken to Tin Shui Wai Police Station, according to a statement released on Facebook by a local social activist and the founder of Civic Passion, Wong Yeung-tat.
- Rick Hui Yui-yu, a Sha Tin District Councillor, was arrested by the police for "obstructing a police officer". The police searched Hui's house in his and his lawyer's presence, according to a Facebook statement by Yau Man-chun, another Sha Tin District Councillor.
Meanwhile, Demosisto announced its arrested members Joshua Wong Chi-fung and Agnes Chow Ting had been granted bail.
Hong Kong pro-democracy activists Joshua Wong Chi-fung and Agnes Chow Ting were arrested on Friday for their involvement in an unlawful assembly, police have announced.
Wong was arrested on three charges of organising, inciting and taking part in an illegal assembly during the besieging of the Wan Chai police headquarters on June 21, while Chow was detained on charges of inciting and taking part in the same illegal assembly.
Sha Tin district council member Rick Hui Yui-yu was also arrested in Kwun Tong on Friday morning, according to his assistant, surnamed Tsang. Police said Hui, 31, was arrested on suspicion of obstructing officers in the execution of their duty in relation to the July 14 clashes at New Town Plaza shopping mall in Sha Tin.
