K-pop group TWICE’s tearful Japanese member Momo hails crowds at sold-out Tokyo Dome concerts

- The nine-member girl group, formed of three Japanese, five Korean and one Taiwanese, which is hugely popular in Japan, ends ‘dome’ tour on Saturday
K-pop girl group TWICE attracted crowds of up to 100,000 people to its two sold-out concerts held at the iconic Tokyo Dome stadium in Japan last Friday and Saturday.
The nine-member girl group performed many of its hit songs, including its very first Japanese single, One More Time.
The Tokyo Dome, built in 1988, is a multipurpose stadium offering about 50,000 seats for spectators at events such as baseball and other sporting events and concerts.
It is one of the country's most prestigious venues – where world-class performers such as Madonna, Beyoncé and the late Whitney Houston have performed in the past – and shows the scale of TWICE’s success and popularity in Japan.
TWICE’s two Tokyo Dome concerts were held five years after a concert by another K-pop group, Girls’ Generation in 2014.
The sell-out success of the concerts is remarkable considering that TWICE made its debut in Japan only 21 months ago.
During one of the concerts, Momo, a Japanese member of the group who is aware of just how significant the band’s shows at the Tokyo Dome were, became emotional.
“Today reminds me of the day when the band was formed,” she said. “I am so happy that the nine of us can perform on this stage. Thank you ONCE [the group’s fan club] for making this dream come true.
