K-pop star Somi’s comeback single What You Waiting For was long overdue – so what’s next for the former I. O. I singer?

The singer born Jeon So-mi rose to stardom after competing in K-pop survival show Produce 101 in 2016, before debuting as a member of the disbanded girl group I. O. I – now she is taking on the world solo
K-pop solo artist Jeon So-mi, known by the stage name Somi, recently made a long-awaited chart comeback with the single What You Waiting For, about a year after her debut song Birthday.
The singer’s latest single, an R&B genre dance-pop, hit streaming sites last Wednesday, July 22.
Somi teamed up with hitmaker Teddy, a producer and founder of her label The Black Label, to co-produce and write the song.
The singer has recently inked a management deal with Interscope, a sub-label of Universal Music Group and is gearing up to break into the worldwide music scene.
“It’s only been a year since Somi debuted, but she’s already joining the pool of high-profile artists,” The Black Label said. “People in the US saw the potential in her from the impact she has on the global audience, even without doing any breaking acts in the country.”
Regarding the deal, the US agency commented: “Somi stands out with her unique and worldly approach to pop music. She is poised to be the next international breakout artist.”
Somi rose to stardom after competing in Mnet’s popular K-pop survival show Produce 101 in 2016. She made it to the top 11 finalists and debuted as a member of the project group I.O.I.
When the group disbanded in 2017, she began a solo act under YG Entertainment's sub-label.
