Following rapper Jennie’s lead – who went solo back in 2018 – K-pop’s best-known girl group appears to be splintering, as Rose and Lisa have already wrapped up recordings, while Jisoo is working on her music

In news likely to bring out a multitude of emotions in K-pop fans, Rose, Lisa and Jisoo of world-beating girl band Blackpink are all poised to released solo tracks – after the band releases its first studio album in September – the group's agency YG Entertainment announced.

“Rose and Lisa have already wrapped up their recordings, whereas Jisoo is enthusiastically working on her music,” YG said in a statement. “All members agreed that [the] Blackpink comeback and its release of the first full-length album should come first. Thus, the solo songs will be gradually out after September.”

The management company also explained the delay of Rose's solo debut, which was to take place last year – offering some solace to fans that it will be worth the wait. “It has been taking a longer time because the singer plans to release an album containing numerous songs, instead of a single,” YG said.

Rapper Jennie was the first member to go solo, releasing her first album “Solo” in November 2018.
As for the band, the quartet is expected to release another new song this month ahead of the September release of its forthcoming album. The track comes on the slipstream of the worldwide attention afforded Sour Candy, the group’s crossover collaboration with Lady Gaga.

For now, it seems the girls are planning to balance time between the band and their solo ventures, which is great news for K-pop fans – for now. But will this lead to the demise of Blackpink, like so many girl groups who wanted to go solo? Let’s hope not.
