Actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson are among those locking it down in the air when it comes to the coronavirus.
At least, they think they are.
“En route to Paris. Paranoid? Prudent? Panicked? Placid? Pandemic? Propaganda? Paltrow’s just going to go ahead and sleep with this thing on the plane,” the Goop founder said on Instagram, where she posted a picture of herself on a flight wearing an appropriately stylish Airinum+Nemen mask.
“I’ve already been in this movie,” she said. “Stay safe. Don’t shake hands. Wash hands frequently.”

Paltrow was joking about her role in Contagion, the 2011 Steven Soderbergh film where she played a Midwestern woman who stops for a fling on her way from a business trip in Hong Kong, only to die soon after she gets home, much to movie-husband Matt Damon’s dismay. Her patient-zero affliction quickly turns into a global pandemic.
Hudson, meanwhile, posted a shot of herself in what appears to be a surgical mask, tagging her picture with the caption: “Travel. 2020.”
Commenters were quick to note that her mask wouldn’t do much good when it came to protecting her from coronavirus. Frequent soap-and-water handwashing, experts say, is a better preventive measure.
How explosion of live-streaming keeps virus-hit China going
According to the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the role of such face masks is “patient source control”, to prevent contamination of the surrounding area when a person who has contracted the virus coughs or sneezes.
Paltrow’s mask, however, was the equivalent of an N95-filtering face piece respirator, the medical version of which, the CDC says, is recommended for health care professionals and could wind up in short supply in a pandemic.
Other pandemic films


Patient Zero
A supervirus turns humankind into highly intelligent killers in this 2018 action horror film directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky. One asymptomatic victim, who can communicate with the infected, leads the last survivors on a hunt for patient zero – and a cure.


Flu
This 2013 disaster film out of South Korea resonates today as the country battles its own Covid-19 crisis (it has the second-highest number of confirmed cases in the world). Written and directed by Kim Sung-su, it centres on an outbreak of a strain of H5N1 that kills its victims within 36 hours.


World War Z 
In this 2013 film, the protagonist – a former United Nations employee Gerry Lane (played by Brad Pitt) – searches for patient zero of a zombie pandemic that threatens to destroy humanity.


Outbreak
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen and based on Richard Preston’s book T he Hot Zone, this star-studded 1995 American medical disaster film focuses on an outbreak of a fictional Ebola-like virus, Motaba, in Zaire (now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and a small US town. Not-so-fun fact: a real-life outbreak of the Ebola virus was occurring in Zaire when the film was released.


The Stand
At a top-secret government lab in California, a weaponised version of influenza is accidentally released in this 1994 American miniseries based on the novel of the same name by horror master Stephen King.


The Cassandra Crossing
This 1976 disaster thriller stars Sophia Loren, Richard Harris, Ava Gardner, Martin Sheen, Burt Lancaster and O.J. Simpson, and focuses on a Swedish terrorist who infects a train’s passengers with a deadly disease.
