PHILIP WOO’S FORMLINE
M Unicorn needs to offset a sharp rise in the weights but had won four times from his opening nine starts at the Valley this season before showing a powerful turn of foot to win on his dirt debut last month. Veteran Berlin Tango has returned to form in his past four starts, including rallying fourths in both C&D starts and a runner-up effort last month over the Valley 1,800m. Woodfire Bro came out of a defeat when nearly tossing his rider with a heart irregularity, but was knocking on the door with placings in three other starts over the 1,600m and 2,000m and has one victory from one start over this C&D. He cannot be ignored. Samarkand is a four-time winner on turf and has had excuses from wide draws in both dirt runs this term. He remains a place chance.
TROUBLE IN RUNNING
APACHE PASS (D433) jumped only fairly - Race 645.
BERLIN TANGO (E120) bumped on jumping - Race 616.
WOODFIRE BRO (G115) when questioned, rider stated that on jumping his mount blundered badly and as a result he and his mount became badly unbalanced and lost ground. He said after this incident his mount did not travel well throughout the event and when he was concerned that there may be something amiss with his mount in the Home Straight, he did not ride it out to the finish when not in a competitive position. After the race was reported by the vet who said the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Has since performed to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and passed an official vet exam which must include additional diagnostic assessments - Race 435.
M UNICORN (G466) from the outside barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stage - Race 558.
SO WE JOY (D082) over the concluding stages had some difficulty obtaining clear running when positioned close to a runner. Post-race vet inspection did not show any significant findings - Race 558.
SAMARKAND (H070) after the race, rider reported that the instructions were to go forward and endeavour to lead. He stated that when his mount did not show sufficient pace in the early stages to lead the event, he elected to take a position with cover - Race 597.
MASSIVE ACTION (E445) near the 200M was steadied - Race 626.
VET'S REPORT
WOODFIRE BRO (G115) 18/02/2024 Rider concerned horse's action during racing. Also heart irregularity noted after racing. (passed on 26/04/2024).
