Recap by phillip woo

Well-backed late, Sky Field showed a terrific turn of foot to get up in the shadows of the post following a rail run in midfield. He showed his true colours after an unlucky effort 10 days back at Sha Tin for a fourth win from nine starts. Stronger did everything right but get the win after hitting the front passing the 50m out following a box-seat run. It was a better effort following a downgrade. Favourite Grateful Heart had his chance after getting his own way in front. It was another good effort but found a couple too smart stepping into Class One here. Beauty Applause came from midfield to finish a non-threatening fourth. He's more effective at Sha Tin. Gold Chest came up one-paced following a prominent run. He's on his mark. Amazing Star was yielding ground 150m out following a pace-stalking run. The big weight took its toll. Shining Ace got by beaten rivals from the rear of the field. He needs a faster pace and a ground with some give. Explosive Witness never ran on from towards the rear. He's likely on his mark after a win at group level two back.

Racing Incident Report

Race Six: (456) - BLUE POOL HANDICAP - Class 1 - 1200Meters

CLASSIC UNICORN was withdrawn on 23.2.21 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore).

Before being allowed to race again, CLASSIC UNICORN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

V Borges, the rider of SHINING ACE, was fined the sum of $2,000 for attempting to mount GOLD CHEST in the Parade Ring.

GOLD CHEST began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped GRATEFUL HEART.

BEAUTY APPLAUSE and EXPLOSIVE WITNESS bumped shortly after the start.

EXPLOSIVE WITNESS and SHINING ACE were steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.

For some distance after the 1100 Metres, EXPLOSIVE WITNESS got its head up when proving difficult to settle.

EXPLOSIVE WITNESS continued to get its head up when proving difficult to settle for some distance in the middle stages.

Making the turn approaching the 1000 Metres, SKY FIELD got its head on the side and lay out towards the heels of BEAUTY APPLAUSE.

SKY FIELD was again awkwardly placed inside the heels of BEAUTY APPLAUSE near the 950 Metres.

At the 300 Metres, GOLD CHEST was steadied when disappointed for running between BEAUTY APPLAUSE and AMAZING STAR which was taken out by GRATEFUL HEART (Z Purton).

Z Purton was reprimanded and told that whilst the Stewards were satisfied that GOLD CHEST had not fully established running to the outside of AMAZING STAR, nonetheless he must ensure that he makes every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground.

Approaching the 100 Metres, AMAZING STAR shifted out under pressure and bumped BEAUTY APPLAUSE.

BEAUTY APPLAUSE was then shifted in away from the heels of SKY FIELD (A Badel) passing the 100 Metres as that horse shifted in under pressure.

In this incident, BEAUTY APPLAUSE shifted in and bumped AMAZING STAR.

A Badel was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

When questioned, J Moreira stated that he was instructed to ride BEAUTY APPLAUSE positively in the early stages and it was felt that BEAUTY APPLAUSE would have sufficient speed to be able to lead.

He said he was further instructed that if AMAZING STAR pressed forward from the outside barrier, it was acceptable for him to allow that horse to cross and then race behind AMAZING STAR.

He said just prior to the start being effected BEAUTY APPLAUSE anticipated the start which resulted in the horse not beginning well and GOLD CHEST, which was drawn immediately to the inside of BEAUTY APPLAUSE, gaining a clear advantage over his mount at the start.

He said because of the manner in which BEAUTY APPLAUSE began, he did not believe that it would be in the best interests of the horse to then try and obtain a forward position as this would mean too much use would have to be made of BEAUTY APPLAUSE to obtain a forward position.

He added despite BEAUTY APPLAUSE not being able to lead as anticipated tonight, he had previously ridden the horse from off the speed and BEAUTY APPLAUSE had run well, so he was content to allow it to settle in a midfield position albeit that was further back in the field than had been intended.

He said the tempo of the early stages was relatively slow and given the circumstances of the race he felt that BEAUTY APPLAUSE finished off the race satisfactorily.

A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY APPLAUSE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

A veterinary inspection of EXPLOSIVE WITNESS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

GRATEFUL HEART, SKY FIELD and STRONGER were sent for sampling.
