A hospital in southwestern China has been ordered to compensate a young man after medical blunder cost him both his kidneys.
Li Xiaobin, 25, was told only 10 days after an operation at the Menghai Hospital of Chinese Medicine in Menghai, Yunnan province, that doctors had removed both his kidneys, the City Express reported.

The operation on March 10 was meant to fix his swollen right kidney after he was involved in a car accident, according to the report.
But after the surgery, Li’s weight increased drastically – from 60kg to 83kg – within days. He was also unable to discharge urine.
It wasn’t until March 20 that doctors told him the bad news: they had removed both his kidneys during the operation.

A hospital spokesman told reporters that although the class and grading of the hospital did not permit it to perform such kidney repair or removal surgeries, doctors did so in order to save Li’s life.
However, the doctors were not aware that they had removed both of Li’s kidneys as the two organs “looked different”, according to the report.
Two months after the blunder came to light, the local medical association found that the hospital held minor responsibilities for the mistake.
But dissatisfied with the ruling, Li’s family appealed for a re-evaluation.

After the re-evaluation, the medical association issued an updated ruling on August 16, stating that the hospital held major responsibility for the malpractice.
It also ordered the hospital to compensate Li for his medical fees amounting to some 300,000 yuan (HK$351,000), as well as to foot the bill for his kidney transplant in a larger city such as Beijing.
