Marriage equality for all

Nicole Leung Hoi-lam, St Paul’s Secondary School

Public support for same-sex marriage in Hong Kong is rising. A University of Hong Kong 2023 report found that 60 per cent of the public supports same-gender marriage, while 23 per cent are neutral and 17 per cent oppose it.

Marriage is a fundamental human right. The Hong Kong government should ensure equal rights and protections for all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation. Legalising same-sex marriage is a crucial step toward achieving this equality.

As an international city, Hong Kong should lead by example in promoting tolerance. By supporting same-sex marriage, we align with global human rights standards and demonstrate our commitment to progress.

While some may argue that same-sex marriage goes against their personal beliefs, we must give all individuals the opportunity to make their own choices. A society built on mutual respect and understanding allows people to love and marry whomever they choose.

The Hong Kong government should promote public understanding and demonstrate its commitment to equality. Legalising same-sex marriage is a vital step toward a fairer and more inclusive society.

Thoughts on DeepSeek AI

Tam Ho-long, SKH Tsang Shiu Tim Secondary School

DeepSeek is an artificial intelligence (AI) model that has captured significant attention in the tech world since its release on January 20.

Its rapid development has stunned the tech community.

In just one year, a Chinese company created an AI model comparable to ChatGPT’s most advanced model.

Even more impressive is its cost efficiency: DeepSeek reportedly required US$5.6 million (HK$43.5 million) to develop – just fraction of ChatGPT-4’s budget.

However, there are certain issues. According to a Bloomberg report, Microsoft and OpenAI are investigating whether DeepSeek accessed OpenAI’s data without authorisation after security researchers reportedly observed individuals linked to DeepSeek using OpenAI to extract large amounts of data last autumn.

A Wired magazine report also highlighted how DeepSeek’s policies indicate it sends significant US user data directly to China, raising privacy and security questions.

Another issue is DeepSeek’s handling of sensitive topics. As a user, I have found its responses to certain questions vague or too cautious, which limits its potential and user experience.

Bridge the education gap

Victoria Lin, Pope Paul VI College

I want to highlight a pressing issue in our society: the growing disconnect between the education system and the job market.

Many students complete their formal education lacking the necessary knowledge to succeed in the workforce.

Traditional education often emphasises theory over practical skills. While a strong theoretical foundation is important, schools should also provide real-world experiences, internships and career-oriented programmes. This would help students develop core skills like problem-solving, teamwork and adaptability.

Career guidance is also crucial. Universities should offer robust career counselling, providing insights into potential career paths and the practical skills that are needed to succeed.

The rise of technology and remote work has transformed the job market. The education system must adapt by integrating digital literacy and emerging technologies into their curriculum.

By equipping students with practical skills and comprehensive career guidance, we can create a skilled workforce ready to meet the evolving needs of our economy. This will empower young people to pursue their careers with confidence and purpose.

Technology and mental health

Aspasia Lam, Leung Shek Chee College

Technology is often seen as harmful to mental health because it can create an artificial emotional connection and expose users to violent, graphic or explicit content, which may lead to negative thoughts. However, it also has positive aspects that can benefit our well-being.

Gamification in apps helps build good habits. By rewarding users for completing tasks, these apps encourage positive behaviours like staying focused or maintaining a workout routine. The instant feedback makes adopting and sticking to healthy habits easier.

Mindfulness apps offer guided meditation techniques that can reduce stress and anxiety. These apps are convenient and affordable ways to help users manage their mental health. For busy or stressed individuals, they provide an accessible way to practise mindfulness without the need for expensive classes.

In conclusion, technology has two sides. While it can contribute to harmful ideation, it also has the potential to enhance our well-being when used wisely. As the world becomes increasingly digital, it’s important to harness technology’s positive aspects.
