Maryknoll Convent School’s ‘Relay for Love’ raises nearly HK$1 million
The wonderful event helped raise public awareness about young people’s physical and mental health
A group of Maryknollers got ready for the activity.Maryknoll Convent School’s “Relay for Love” helped raise public awareness about young people’s physical and mental health. The event, held on Sunday at Kowloon Tsai Sports Ground, raised nearly HK$1 million to promote sports at the school.
In the relay, at least one member of a team of four to 10 people had to run or jog on the track for two hours. Altogether, about 800 people took part in the activity.
All proceeds will go to the Maryknoll Educational Trust’s Sports Fund, which supports sports-related activities in both the primary and secondary sections of the school, including the hiring of professional coaches and renovation of sports facilities.
Maryknoll alumna and windsurfing star Hayley Chan Hei-man said the fundraiser sent an important message. “Sports are beneficial to mental and physical health. The event encourages young people to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. As well as studies, they should focus on sports, among others,” said Chan, who won a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games in Inchoen, South Korea.
She said sports can make everyone healthier and stronger, while teaching us how to tackle tough situations and cope with pressure. “The event highlights the positive image of sports. I hope everyone can do sports. Sports are not only for elite athletes,” she said.
