What would you do if Hong Kong was struck down by a deadly zombie virus? It might sound strange, but you never know – living dead, flesh-and-brain-eating monsters could strike at any moment!
If this happened, there would be extreme panic and confusion among the Hong Kong public. Everyone would be desperate to escape, grabbing everything they could while screaming and running for their lives. It would be complete chaos!
To make matters worse, there are many different types of zombies to worry about – from the creepy, slow-moving ones in the TV show The Walking Dead to the fast, vicious monsters in the movie World War Z.
No matter what kind of zombie you come across, there are certain things you should know about Hong Kong’s geography that will help keep you alive at all costs. So without further delay, here are the best and worst places to be to survive a zombie attack on our city.

Worst Places:
Hospitals will be full of infected people when the zombie virus first breaks out, so you’ll want to stay as far away from the city’s 42 public hospitals as possible – especially the emergency rooms.
You’ll also want to avoid Hong Kong’s most crowded urban areas such as Mong Kok, which packs 130,000 people per square kilometre. That means the virus would be able to spread quickly and easily there. You might want to head to somewhere like The Peak, where low population density and gated mansions will provide safety.
Zombies like to hang out in dark and cold places, so it’s probably best to avoid the MTR and stick to transport that runs above ground.
Lastly, you’ll want to stay away from Hong Kong’s border crossings and entry ports, as the infection could spread from other places to the city by plane, boat, or train. Towns near the Hong Kong International Airport like Tung Chung, or towns near the Shenzhen border like Sheung Shui, could be hit first, so get out of these areas as quick as you can.

Better Places:
Hong Kong Island might be really crowded, but it’s still an island, meaning it would be easier to defend if zombies were to come from the north. As far as we know, zombies are bad swimmers, and water serves as a good source of protection.
The island would be especially safe if the government were to blow up or block off the five road and rail cross-harbour tunnels, so that zombies would have no way of reaching that part of the city. If you are able to reach the island before the apocalypse, or already live there, this will increase your chances of survival.
Hong Kong also has 11 army bases, as well as a navy base and military airfield at Shek Kong, which could offer some protection from zombies.
The bases in Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon Tong have high walls, gates and barbed wire, and could serve as a temporary shelter for people living on the Kowloon side.

Best Places:
During a zombie uprising, you should maintain as much distance as possible between yourself and the ghouls.
Luckily, Hong Kong is made up of more than 200 offshore islands, many of which are uninhabited. If you can collect enough food and drinking water, and find a boat to reach one of these islands, you’ll be able to hide out there for weeks or even months until the whole zombie thing blows over.
You could even grow crops and form your own settlement there while you wait for society to rebuild itself. Islands like Po Toi, Kau Sai Chau, Tap Mun or Tung Ping Chau are all good places to consider.
Lastly, people who live by the seaside have a serious advantage in the event of a zombie outbreak.
There should be enough fish to sustain you in the short term, and you can enjoy a solitary lifestyle floating around the offshore waters of Hong Kong.
