The most anticipated games of 2019: Everything from sci-fi shooter ‘The Outer Worlds’ to Ellie’s journey in ‘The Last of Us 2’
There’s something for everyone on our list of the best upcoming games for the next twelve months
A brand new year means a brand new slew of hotly-anticipated games for players to look forward to. With something for fans of every genre, here are our picks for the best upcoming games of 2019.
The Outer Worlds
This massive sci-fi single player open-world first-person-shooter, which sees the protagonist wake up from cryogenic sleep decades later than planned, looks to be equal parts quirky fun and non-stop action.
Kingdom Hearts 3
Sora returns in this hack-and-slash action game starring Disney favourites, such as Toy Story’s Woody and Buzz. Players can look forward to exploring many new worlds (such as Andy’s bedroom from Toy Story) in this third instalment of the popular series.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Set in 1500s Japan, this action-adventure game promises a hard-hitting combat system and a brutal level of difficulty. Players take on the role of a ninja tasked with protecting the young heir of the clan he serves, and nothing will stop him: not even death.
Total War: Three Kingdoms
The popular Total War series is coming to China, bringing its satisfying mix of turn-based strategy and real-time tactics to the Three Kingdoms era of ancient China. Play as historical figures such as Cao Cao and Liu Bei, and attempt to unite all of China.
Wasteland 3
With the same post-nuclear apocalyptic setting that inspired Fallout, Wasteland 3 is expected to have a stellar narrative, great dialogue, and a polished combat system. Details about the plot are still sparse for now, but players will lead a squad of rangers through a frozen wasteland and battle bandits and other survivors.
Cyberpunk 2077
This shooter RPG is set in Night City, a seedy high-tech metropolis rift with both blue-collar and white-collar crime. Adapted from a 1988 table top role-playing game that features the same edgy setting, this mega blockbuster from the studio behind The Witcher series is almost sure to be a winner.
From humble beginnings to global sensation: The origin story of Nintendo's Mario
Anthem
Mass Effect studio Bioware is back with sci-fi shooter Anthem. Players will pilot an Iron Man-like suit of armour to fight off multiple threats in an open world that’s shared with up to three friends.
The Last of Us 2
The long awaited sequel to The Last of Us will be released in late 2019. The captivating story of Joel and Ellie continues, and it appears we will see a darker side of our female protagonist as she battles a cult in a post-apocalyptic world.
Untitled Pokémon game
Nintendo and Game Freak has already promised us a fully-fledged and brand new Pokémon role-playing game, set to launch in the second half of 2019. The new title has no name yet, but it will most likely be set in a new region with the original Pokémon’s tried-and-tested gameplay system.
