Our cadets did a blind taste test to determine which was the best chocolate chip cookie in Hong Kong.Baked goods lovers would certainly have an opinion on which brand sells the best cookies, but might their preferences be swayed if we put them to a blind taste test? In honour of Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, we asked our cadets (it didn’t take much convincing) to taste five of the most popular chocolate chip cookies in Hong Kong, blindfolded, and rate them out of five. Here’s the verdict:
Pret a Manger
Like Mrs Fields, Pret cookies are well-suited to our hectic city lives, as they are situated in a number of MTR stations. And, like at Subway, their cookies are nice and crisp on the outside and gooey in the middle when eaten fresh. Our cadets marked them down for their sweetness, but at less than HK$10 each, you can’t really complain!

Mrs Fields
The alluring smell of Mrs Fields’ cookies never fails to tempt us as we pass it on our frantic commutes through MTR stations. Their chocolate chip cookies are deliciously chewy and are the perfect cure to your sugar craving. They make a decent on-the-go treat but the size of the cookies is a bit stingy, considering the price you pay.

Cookie Department
A cross between a brownie and a cookie, this fist-sized treat is generously packed with large chunks of chocolate, which keep it soft and gooey even hours after buying it. Despite being sinfully cake-like, our cadets found it too heavy and costly for a single cookie.

Subway
Whether you’re adding a cookie to your meal deal or simply could not resist the lure of the cookie display rack, Subway’s chocolate chip cookies are a definite crowd-pleaser. Depending on when you go, you might get a stale one, but if you happen upon a fresh batch, they’re tough to beat. Crispy on the edges and chewy in the centre, this cookie scored the highest rating by all the cadets.

Eric Kayser
This bakery is known for its French traditional breads, but little did we know they also serve up the chunkiest cookies in the market. Although the nuttiness of the cookies proved a little overwhelming for our cadets, the nuts provided all the flavour and texture you could pack into one little cookie. These cookies can stay molten for hours, probably because of the load of chocolate chips and nuts packed into them.
