The coalition of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was dealt a blow on Saturday after state rival Barisan Nasional (BN) trounced Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Johor election.

BN cruised to victory with 48 seats out of 56 up for grabs, while Anwar’s PH managed only eight. BN’s result was better than the 40 seats it secured in the 2022 race. The two-thirds majority it retains gives it absolute power to pass constitutional amendments and redraw electoral boundaries in Johor.

The state was turned into a battleground between the federal partners, with both coalitions fielding candidates in every constituency and a voter turnout nearing the expected 70 per cent mark for an electorate of more than 2.7 million.

The result now casts doubt on Anwar’s unwieldy coalition government and could have implications for whether a snap national election is called.

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, deputy prime minister and BN president, earlier thanked Johoreans for once again choosing BN to govern the state, stressing that the party “will not be arrogant in victory” and would work hard to fulfil its campaign pledges.

“We also hope this victory will trigger a blue wave in the elections to come,” he said.
