The disturbing discovery of a naked body, believed to be that of a foreign national, in a rooftop water tank in Bali has raised alarm and sparked an investigation.

The Bali branch of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said in a press release the man’s body was discovered on Tuesday at a lodging house on Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai in Jimbaran, Badung, a popular tourist area in southern Bali.

Police said the homeowner had called a plumber to check on the tank after he could not turn on the water, which led to the gruesome find.

“Initially, the victim’s body was thought to be a mannequin, but after checking again, it turned out that it was indeed a human body and the plumber immediately informed the homeowner,” said I Ketut Sukadi, spokesman for the Denpasar Police, as quoted by local news outlet TribunBali.

The homeowner notified police and Basarnas after finding the corpse.

Police had not yet identified the body, but Ketut said it was strongly suspected to be that of a foreigner due to his white skin and curly brown hair. He also noted that there were multiple abrasions and bruises on the corpse, though investigators had yet to determine the exact cause of death.
