An Indonesian celebrity’s tight connections with politicians has come under scrutiny after he was recently given the rank of lieutenant colonel by the defence minister despite having no military experience, attracting claims of “nepotism”.

Deddy Corbuzier, a former TV personality and current YouTube influencer, shared news of his appointment on Instagram on December 9, calling it “an extraordinary honour”. He added he was ready to perform his duties as “ambassador” to the Army Reserve Command (ComCad).
A day into his rank, Corbuzier was photographed in uniform saluting Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly before recording one of his YouTube programmes in which Laoly sought to “dispel misconceptions” about Indonesia’s new criminal code, which among other things, outlaws sex outside marriage.
There has been plenty of reaction to Corbuzier’s military appointment, with some fans cheering the move.
“You certainly look the part, especially with your great physique and bearing,” raved Facebook user Nabas Koti.
