Chinese President Xi Jinping has praised Hong Kong’s leader for firmly safeguarding national security and revamping the city’s district council system. The Chinese leader made the remarks during Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s duty visit to Beijing on December 18, 2023. It was the first time the high-level closed-door meeting was also attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang. Previously, Hong Kong chief executives would hold separate meetings with other central government leaders. Xi also urged Lee’s administration to unite society and boost the city’s development by seizing “historic opportunities”.
