Taiwan’s former president Ma Ying-jeou left on April 1, 2024 for an 11-day trip to mainland China where he is expected to have his second meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in an effort to improve cross-strait relations. It is Ma’s second trip to the mainland since stepping down as the island’s leader in 2016 and the question of whether he will meet Xi will be one of the main areas of interest. Ma last met Xi in Singapore in late 2015 for a landmark summit shortly before the current Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-wen, won the election. He remains a senior member of Taiwan's main opposition party the Kuomintang (KMT), which in January lost the presidential election for the third consecutive time but has no official party position.
