Vivo launches premium X200 smartphone weeks after Apple, Huawei release new handsets

Chinese smartphone giant Vivo on Monday launched its premium X200 series on the mainland, featuring MediaTek’s new 3-nanometre processor and Live Photo format capability, weeks after Apple and Huawei Technologies rolled out their latest flagship handset models.

Priced from 4,299 yuan (US$608) to 6,799 yuan, the X200 series marks the latest effort by Vivo to crack the industry’s lucrative high-end segment in the world’s largest smartphone market and across the globe. Vivo said it will start shipping the X200 series from October 19.
Initially known for its low-budget handsets, Vivo has risen to become the world’s No 4 smartphone vendor in the second quarter, with a 9.1 per share in a tie with Oppo, according to research firm IDC. In China, Vivo ranked as the nation’s top smartphone vendor with an 18.5 per cent share in that quarter, according to Counterpoint Research.
The Dongguan-based company’s new handset series comes in three models – the entry level X200 as well as the X200 Pro and X200 Pro mini – powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 system-on-a-chip, which the Taiwanese semiconductor firm touts as “optimised for edge artificial intelligence (AI) applications, immersive gaming and incredible photography”.
Edge AI refers to the deployment of AI models directly on devices to enable real-time data processing and analysis, without reliance on cloud computing services.

That advanced new chip in the X200 reflects Vivo’s drive to push the latest technology in its smartphones, ahead of other Android handset competitors.
