ByteDance sells 46,000 Pico 4 VR headsets online in China since launching sales last month
- JD.com generated 65 per cent of total Pico 4 sales, while Alibaba’s Tmall marketplace and ByteDance’s Douyin video app each sold 17 per cent
- Company founder and president Henry Zhou told Chinese media last month that Pico 4 is expected to sell more than 1 million units
The Pico 4 stand-alone virtual reality (VR) headset, launched by TikTok owner ByteDance last month, generated more than 46,000 online orders in China in the first 18 days, according to market intelligence firm Sandalwood Advisors.
Between the launch on September 27 and October 14, e-commerce site JD.com was responsible for 65 per cent of the total sales, while Alibaba Group’s Tmall marketplace and ByteDance’s short video platform Douyin each made up 17 per cent of orders, the report said.
Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.
The headset is the first new product from Pico since ByteDance acquired the VR start-up last August. The low-cost gadget, priced at 2,499 yuan (US$344) with 128 gigabytes of storage and 2,799 yuan with 256GB, is below the average price of 3,000 yuan for a smartphone in China, making the VR device “more acceptable among consumers”, the report said.
However, sales are still far behind Pico’s target. Company founder and president Henry Zhou said during a group interview with Chinese media last month that Pico 4 is expected to sell more than 1 million units.
