ATP Tour: China’s Wu Yibing writes more history as he rockets up rankings list
- Chinese tennis player reaches 58th in latest rankings after winning Dallas Open
- No male player from the country has been that high in singles in the professional era
Chinese tennis player Wu Yibing has climbed 39 places to 58th in the ATP rankings issued on Monday after his historic Dallas Open victory.
No Chinese man has ever been so high in the singles rankings in the professional era.
Wu triumphed over American John Isner 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 in the final of the indoor event in Dallas on Sunday, becoming the first Chinese man to win an ATP singles crown.
He fended off four match points against the big server in almost three hours of play. In March last year, Wu had been ranked 1,869th.
“I made history here for my country and for my home,” Wu said. “I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys.”
The 23-year-old triumphed in the junior singles and doubles at the US Open in 2017, but was unable to play on the ATP Tour from March 2019 to January 2022 because of injuries.
