Opinion | Home and Away: Southampton bracing for threat of big Blue tempest in Sergio Aguero
English port city, the scene of many iconic and historic events, now must face Argentina's feared prolific goalscorer
The port of Southampton has weathered many a storm. The Romans and Vikings once sailed in, kicking up a bit of stink, and from its shores Henry V sent his troops across the English Channel to Agincourt for a set-to with the French military.
The Pilgrim Fathers left from here for the New World in their leaky boats, the Speedwell and Mayflower - a frantic voyage that eventually led to the founding of the USA.
Then there was love-rat Henry VIII and his carrack Tudor warship, the Mary Rose. His pride of the fleet came a cropper in the Solent when attacking regular invaders, the French.
The city was flattened by the Nazis' Luftwaffe and we will never live down our role in the sinking of the Titanic, for it was from the city's ocean-liner terminal that the unsinkable slipped its moorings.
But how will our battled-scarred, weather-beaten city and its sparkling second-placed EPL football club fair against the tempest heading our away in the form of a squat, powerful 26-year-old who goes by the name of Sergio Aguero?
The Argentine is propping up Manchester City's season, and many a Saints fan - this one included - is worried his hat-trick against Bayern Munich midweek to rescue City's Champions League ambitions, was a portent of the cyclone that threatens to break Southampton's tenacious defence tomorrow at St Mary's.
