It is more about learning than winning a berth in the IRB Women's Sevens Series, but Hong Kong will still aim to be competitive as they face strong opposition in this weekend's core team qualifying competition.

Four teams will join the likes of New Zealand, England and Australia in the annual World Series as the 12-team qualifying competition kicks off on Friday at Shek Kip Mei.

Hong Kong aim to make up more than just the numbers as they face Brazil, the Netherlands and Portugal in the preliminary round pool competition.

The first target will be to finish in the top two, or as one of two best third-placed teams, so as to make it to the Cup quarter-finals.

But Hong Kong also have an eye on the Asian Games later this month in Incheon.

"This competition will certainly benefit Hong Kong as they will definitely come on from the experience of playing at a higher level," said their coach Anna Richards.
