Great Britain’s three-time Olympic gold medallist Adam Peaty said he wants “cheating” Chinese swimmers knocked out of the sport and urged the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) to “wake up and do your job”.
China raced to gold in the men’s 4x100 metres medley relay with a time of three minutes, 27.46 seconds, edging out the United States by 0.55 seconds and bronze medallists France by 0.92.
Peaty, whose British team finished in fourth with 3:29.60, suggested there was more to the race than met the eye.
“In sport, one of my favourite quotes I’ve seen lately is, ‘There’s no point in winning if you don’t win it fair,’” Peaty said. “I think you know that truth in your heart.
“Even if you touch and you know you’re cheating, you’re not winning, right?

“So, for me, if you’ve been on that and you have been contaminated twice, I think as an honourable person it means you should be out of the sport. We know sport is not that simple.”
Peaty said he remained silent on the matter to stay focused throughout the Games, but decided it was finally time to express his discontent with what he claimed is a “fractured” system.
“We’ll see how they do in four years’ time, but I think the people that need to do the job will wake up and do the job.
“We’ve got to have faith in the system, but we don’t,” Peaty added. “It’s just got to be stricter. What I’ve said from the start is that it is fraud. If you’re cheating, it is fraud.”
Two of the four members in China’s relay team, Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun, were listed among the 23 swimmers who tested positive for a banned heart medication ahead of the Tokyo Games in 2021, but were permitted to compete in Paris by Wada.
Wada backed its decision, but The New York Times has since reported another doping allegation of two swimmers who tested positive for a banned steroid in 2022.
Peaty added that he does not intend to generalise all Chinese athletes.
“I don’t want to paint a whole nation or a whole group of people with one brush, I think [doing that is] unfair,” Peaty said.
“But there have been two cases of it and I think it’s very disappointing, and I’ve tried to keep out of the conversations until now for the betterment of the team but I think we’re going to use that to our advantage the next four years, whether I’m there or not.”


The British star is one of several to question Chinese swimmers in Paris. Australian swimming commentator Brett Hawke had suggested Pan Zhanle’s world-record 100 metres freestyle time was “not humanly possible”.
Several Chinese swimmers, including Qin and 10-time Olympic medallist Zhang Yufei, have come to their own defence, saying they were innocent of any doping allegations and that opponents were just “threatened”.
“Some tricks aim to disrupt our preparation rhythm and destroy our psychological defence,” Qin said. “But we are not afraid.”
Meanwhile, there were fierce reactions to the comments on Chinese social media site, Weibo.
“This is a reflection of the confidence, arrogance, and scepticism towards the authority characteristic of some in Western cultures,” one user commented.
“When the US team continues to dominate the gold medals, you have no objections? When “white” athletes win, you have no doubts, but when our Chinese swimming team wins gold, you’re quick to criticise? A bunch of hypocrites.” another said.
