A Paris Olympics poster from the television network Eurosport has been slammed as racist by users on X after it failed to include any Chinese or Japanese athletes who helped their countries finish second and third in the medal table, respectively.
On Monday, Eurosport shared a poster that featured some of the biggest stars from this year’s Summer Games with a caption that read: “The Greatest Show on Earth. Paris 2024, we will never forget you.”
Social media users were quick to attack the broadcaster, which has television networks in Europe and parts of Asia, for featuring only one Asian: South Korean shooter Kim Ye-ji.

“Does it give you some kind of sick pleasure to erase almost all East Asians from the screen?” one user asked.
Commented another: “Even Snoop Dogg is on this poster, but it’s crazy that Japanese medallists are not shown. I’m always surprised by the high level of discrimination in [Europe].”
Said an X user: “There is only one Asian. I would like to see the withdrawal of this racist post.”
Kim, who won silver in the women’s 10-metre air-pistol shooting and went viral for her “main character energy” in Paris, featured on the poster alongside athletes such as Noah Lyles and Novak Djokovic, and celebrities Tom Cruise and Snoop Dogg.

However, some users did not see the problem and argued that the broadcaster was appealing to their primarily European audience.
“It’s Eurosport. There are almost no European athletes on CCTV posters,” one user said.
Other users said that athletes from other countries such as Italy had also been overlooked.
Several Chinese athletes did go viral durning the Paris Olympics.
One was gymnast Zhou Yaqin, who learned about biting medals only when she saw her Italian counterparts doing it on the podium.

Another was tennis superstar Zheng Qinwen, who received global attention when she eliminated world No 1 Iga Swiatek on her way to winning gold. Zheng featured in Nike’s pre-Olympics ad and trains in Barcelona.
Eurosport were at the centre of a sexist scandal during the Paris Games when commentator Bob Ballard was sacked from the network for remarks he made after Australia’s gold in the women’s 4x100 metres freestyle final.
“Well, the women just finishing off. You know what women are like, hanging around, doing their make-up,” Ballard said.
Ballard later apologised on X saying that the “comments I made during the Australian freestyle relay victory ceremony on Saturday have caused some offence”.
“It was never my intention to upset or belittle anyone and, if I did, I apologise,” he said. “I am a massive advocate of women’s sport.”
