The winners of the Anta Guanjun Hong Kong 100 (HK100) ultra-marathon smashed course records in both the men’s and women’s races, with two runners tackling the 103km (64-mile) race in under 10 hours for the first time.

In the men’s race, Meng Guangfu, from mainland China, finished in nine hours, 43 minutes and 10 seconds to claim the HK100 title in back-to-back years.

His time was more than 17 minutes faster than You Peiquan’s previous course record of 10:00:17, set in 2020.

In the women’s event, Nepalese runner Sunmaya Budha finished in 11:11:47, knocking down Xiang Fuzhao’s record time of 11:28:21, which was also from 2020, for the win.

“I thought it was possible, in theory, to break the 10-hour mark, but in reality, there are a lot of uncertainties, especially in 100km cross-country races,” Meng said.

“Today, I managed to withstand the pressure … running alone at the front is very stressful, as I think that the people behind me might catch up with me at any time.”
