- July is the hottest month in Hong Kong historically, so hikers need to take special precautions like carrying lots of water and sunscreen

As Hong Kong enters its hottest month of the year, trail runners find themselves doing anything they can to beat the July heat. Canadian expat Anik Tremblay, who has been in Hong Kong for 10 years, has covered the city’s many trails over and over.
Tremblay said running in heat requires a number of precautions including sufficient water, sunscreen, not taking on trails outside of your comfort zone, and also making use of shade during the hike. She shared five of her favourite hikes to do with lots of cover for those who want to beat the heat.
Hong Pak Country Trail
“The good thing about this hike is basically the whole run is in the shade. This is on Hong Kong Island and the starting point is the Quarry Bay MTR, and then you walk a bit to link up to the trail, and in total it’s about 3.3 kilometres long with a lot of technical sections, which is good for trail runners. There is also the dinosaur stone, and nice views of the cityscape at Mount Parker and Tai Koo Shing. The end point is the Taikoo MTR.”

Hong Kong Trail Section Three
“Also on Hong Kong Island, the start point is Peel Rise and the end point is the Wan Chai Gap, which is next to the public toilet, public transportation and a kiosk that sells food. It’s approximately 6.5 kilometres. As part of the Hong Kong Trail, this hike has a moderate level of difficulty however is easily accessible, very runnable, well marked and not much of an elevation gain. Most of the hike is shaded and there are a few streams to stop at for cooling down.”
