CrossFit Games 2021 day two round-up: Tia-Clair Toomey draws closer to record fifth title, Medeiros plans to ‘die for points’
- Tia-Clair Toomey has one hand on her fifth straight CrossFit Games win after another impressive day in Wisconsin
- It is all to play for on the men’s side, with a number of competitors taking wins in individual events but Medeiros is in pole position
Tia-Clair Toomey looks all but certain to win her fifth straight CrossFit Games title, after another impressive display on day two of the individual competition in Wisconsin. She has now won five out of eight events over the first two days. A fifth title would be equal the record of her old training partner Mat Fraser.
Toomey almost looked human in the opening event (event five) of the day by finishing sixth. The athletes had to complete four rounds of four rope climbs, 400 or 500 calorie on the ski erg for the women and men respectively, and a sand bag carry. The event was won by Laura Horvath (Hungary), followed by Gabriela Migala (Poland) and Haley Adams (US).
Business returned to normal when Australian Toomey won the next two events (event six and seven), which were combined. They had seven minutes to complete five rounds for time of alternative 250m runs and one clean of increasing weights, starting at 165lb (75kg), up to 205lb. Then, they had eight minutes to do five rounds of 200m runs alternative with a clean of even heavier weights, starting at 210lb up to 230lb.
Kristi Eramo O’Connell (US) and Kristin Holte (Norway) came second and third in event six. Horvath and Migala came second and third in event seven.
The penultimate event of the day was a handstand walk over a ramp and parallel bars. It was won by Danielle Brandon (US), followed by Adams and Wells.
There was one final event of the day that was kept secret until the last minute. When finally announced it was a combination of the echo bike and snatches. The event was won by Amanda Barnhart (US), followed by Annie Thorsdottir (Iceland) and Horvath.
