It is 100 days until the start of the Southeast Asian Games, which will take place in the Philippines from Saturday, November 30, until Wednesday, December 11.
First competed in 1896, this is the 30th edition of the event.
The 2019 Southeast Asian Games will be the fourth time that the Philippines has held the biennial event after 1981, 1991 and 2005.
They stepped in to replace original hosts Brunei, although the new hosts nearly pulled out themselves before reaffirming their commitment last summer.


Now the hosts are confident they can perform.
“We are capable of winning more than 100 gold medals,” said Abraham Tolentino, the Philippines Olympic Committee chairman in January.
The Philippines won 112 gold medals the last time the country hosted the event in 2005, enough to secure their first general title at the Southeast Asian Games.


They will need to dethrone Malaysia – who lifted 145 golds and 323 overall medals at the 2017 Games on home turf in Kuala Lumpur.
There were 404 events across 38 sports in Malaysia two years ago, but 2019 will be the biggest ever SEA Games. This year there will be 530 events in 54 sports, with chess and underwater hockey in as demonstration events.
The sports are divided into three broader categories: “Compulsory Sports”, “Asian Games and Olympics Sports”, and “Regional and New Sports”.

The compulsory sports are athletics and aquatics. These also provide the vast majority of medals.
New sports include e-sports, which will offer medals across six games: Dota 2, Starcraft II, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Arena of Valour, Tekken 7 and Hearthstone.
Elsewhere, other new additions include: 3-on-3 basketball, breaking (dancesport), beach handball, jiu-jitsu, kurash, sambo, skateboarding, surfing, and underwater hockey – You can see a full list of sports below.

At the last SEA Games in 2017, several national and games records were set, while several of the champions from last year’s Asian Games are sure to compete. The Southeast Asian medal winners from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will also be on show in the Philippines.
Singaporean swimming star Joseph Schooling, the Rio butterfly gold medallist, is arguably the most well-known athlete competing in Philippines.
There is also set to be a lot of competition in the weightlifting events, including from home hope and Rio silver medallist Hidilyn Diaz.
Thailand’s Sopita Tanasan and Sukanya Srisurat won weightlifting gold in Rio, with Pimsiri Sirikaew taking silver and Sinphet Kruaithong a bronze. Thailand also won medals in taekwondo through Panipak Wongpattanakit and Tawin Hanprab.

In Rio, Indonesia won gold in the mixed doubles badminton through Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, plus weightlifting medals from Sri Wahyuni Agustiani and Eko Yuli Irawan. Vietnam’s Hoang Xuan Vinh won a gold and silver in shooting events.
Aside from those who won medals at Rio 2016, the other participating countries of the 11 are Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, East Timor, Malaysia and Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
They will be competing at venues including the Philippine Arena, the world’s largest indoor arena, which is set to host the opening ceremony, with the closing ceremony in the athletics stadium in New Clark City. That is where the Black Eyed Peas and Apl.de. Ap, their Filipino-American member, will perform.

This year’s 44 Games venues are divided into four groups – the Clark cluster, Metro Manila cluster, Subic cluster and “other areas”.
