UFC London: Darren Till stunned by Jorge Masvidal as hopes for quick title return go up in smoke
- Englishman suffers second straight loss
- Masvidal was huge underdog going into the fight
Till (17-2-1) was knocked out cold by Masvidal who improved his record to 33-13 and ended a two-fight losing streak against the 26-year-old.
“The Gorilla” was expected to make easy work of Masvidal in what was widely considered to be a quick launchpad back to the top of the division to challenge for the welterweight strap, a place many had tipped Till for before his one-sided defeat to former champion Tyron Woodley last September.
Now, he finds himself further down the ladder of a changeable and busy welterweight division after a shock loss to rank outsider Masvidal at 3:05 of round two.
Another man who has been generating a lot of buzz in the division since making his debut in UFC earlier this month, Ben Aksren, was at the fight in London. No doubt, with an eye on a bumper clash against Till with whom he has ben jousting on social media for weeks. But Askren may have wondered why he made the journey to size up an opponent who was outclassed on the night and is looking less and less like the champion-in-waiting he was touted as after winning the first six fights of his UFC career.
As for Masvidal, he might have thought his chances of a shot at the welterweight strap had passed him by after five losses in nine bouts prior to Saturday’s clash, but after he overpowered the division’s No 5 contender, will no doubt feel he deserves to be in the conversation for a title shot.
