UFC: Justin Gaethje’s teammate Drew Dober set to earn ranking with impressive TKO of Alexander Hernandez
- Referee Herb Dean steps in late in the second round as Dober peppers Hernandez’s face with strikes
- Dober calls out lightweight contender Paul Felder, who was calling the fight beside the Octagon
Justin Gaethje’s training partner Drew Dober put himself on the lightweight division’s radar after a big win against ranked opponent Alexander Hernandez at UFC Fight Night on Wednesday.
Dober (24-9, one no contest), who is likely to leapfrog Hernandez (11-3) after the second-round TKO, was able to withstand an early flurry of first-round punches and takedowns before turning the tables in the second.
“It’s fantastic because coming from a Muay Thai background, I had a hard time fighting guys who can move,” the 31-year-old Dober said in his post-fight Octagon interview with Daniel Cormier, citing his coach and game plan.
“I was training to stand still and land bombs. I wasn’t trying to hit hard but often – the more you touch them on the chin, the more likely they will go down … he got me with a couple of takedowns, he’s a strong man.”
Dober stunned Hernandez with a clean right hook late in the second round, before landing a flurry of hooks and straights, dropping his younger opponent. Hernandez eventually stood up but did not defend himself, causing referee Herb Dean to waive the fight off at 4:25.
